Old Dhaka dazzles celebrating Shakrain

Old Dhaka’s “Shakrain,” a kite festival traditionally held at the end of Poush, the ninth month of the Bengali calendar, has returned to the capital with all its glory.

The day-long celebration, which takes place in mid-January, kicks off with kite flying: people get on to their rooftops for kite fights with neighbours. Every home's roof is now humming with people of all ages. As the sun goes down, the party and fireworks take over the festivities.

Fire breathing could be seen on the roofs as a means of entertaining people. Loud music, be it of any language or genre, awakened the whole city, with people losing themselves in dance and never missing a beat.
